On March 31st, the City of Norcross will be bombed – with yarn! Sponsored by the Norcross Art Center (The Nest) yarn bombing is a type of street art that employs colorful displays of knitted or crocheted items affixed to objects in a public area. In Norcross, they’re calling the event “Spring into Yarn,” with urban knitters getting the chance to cover downtown bicycle racks, lamp posts, fences, utility poles and even trees with their colorful creations. There is actually an International Yarn Bombing Day; however, that day is in June, too far off for event organizers eager to “knit one pearl two” in Norcross.
Co-sponsoring the project is one of the city’s newest downtown retailers, “Home Norcross” located at 138 Holcomb Bridge Road. Owner Taylor Covert along with The Nest Director Lori Sturgess will be hosting workshops on crocheting and knitting at their respective locations, and participants get to select where their work will be displayed. The free workshops are being held February 18th and March 17th. Participants will enjoy light refreshments while learning to knit from 11am – 12pm, get details on how to yarn bomb from noon – 1pm, and then take up beginning crochet from 1- 2pm. Completed items will be installed March 31st between 9am – 5pm. The “Spring into Yarn” bombing project will be on display the entire month of April throughout the City of Norcross.
To add to the fun – artists, visitors and residents can take pictures of their favorite pieces and submit them to artists@norcrossartsalliance.org for a chance to win a weekly prize. Weekly winners will then get a chance to win a grand prize. All photography will be put on the Norcross Arts Alliance and aplacetoimagine.com websites.
